Donated by Green Mountain Energy Company’s Big Texas Sun Club®
6 kW solar array, arranged in two groupings of six and eight solar panels; each panel generates 170 watts of electricity in full sun
One of the PV arrays is fixed meaning it does not move and it is pointed south; the second PV array is a tracking array which rotates to follow the sun throughout the day
Visitors learning more about solar energy can manually control the tracking array and check on the website for output data
About Sheldon Lake State Park & Environmental Learning Center
2,800 acre outdoor education and recreation facility located in northeast Houston
Primary activities on the lake include fishing, and wildlife observation
Activities at the Environmental Learning Center include group programming, birding, wildlife/nature study and fishing for children
Learning Center includes a ½ mile self-guided nature trail that passes 28 naturalized ponds which contain alligators and other wildlife
These arrays are part of a renewable energy system which also includes a small wind turbine, a solar water heater and a weather station
