Green Mountain Energy® Solar at the Dallas ISD Environmental Education Center—Seagoville

About the Project

  • Dedicated in 2004
  • 1 kW solar array funded by Green Mountain Energy Company’s Big Texas Sun Club®: offsets about 2,600 pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) a year, which is the equivalent not driving 2,900 miles
  • One of 31 schools participating in the Texas Solar for Schools program
  • Has a monitor that transfers data to a site on the internet that allows students to see how much electricity is being generated
  • Is incorporated into the curriculum and used as a teaching tool on renewable energy and the environment
  • Helps the school reduce its CO2 emissions and save energy and money

About Dallas ISD Environmental Education Center


  • Opened in the late 1970s and located in southeast Dallas County in Seagoville, TX
  • Offers programs designed to extend and enrich the state and local schools’ curriculum
  • Consists of 500 acres of natural Texas habitat and includes interactive displays, nature trails, plants, animals, exhibits, laboratories, a greenhouse and various gardens
  • Museum portion of the center includes a large orientation theater and a variety of instructive exhibits that focus on the actual ecosystems at the Environmental Center site
