Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™ Donates $103,000 towards Solar Power for New York Non-Profits

Bard College, The BLK ProjeK, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and Randall’s Island Park Alliance to receive solar installations in 2014

New York, NY
– Four New York non-profits were announced today as recipients of a combined $103,000 in solar energy donations from the Green Mountain Energy™ Sun Club™. In addition to helping the recipients lower their electricity costs and better achieve their organizational goals, these donations include educational information on how solar works to help them promote solar energy in the communities they serve. The Sun Club is a unique program enabling Green Mountain Energy Company and its employees and customers to contribute funds to socially responsible non-profits for renewable energy installations.

The 2014 Sun Club award recipients are:

  • Bard College (Annandale on Hudson) $35,000 – bard.edu
—Incorporating new solar array and monitoring system into environmental curriculum
  • The BLK ProjeK (Bronx) $12,000 – theblkprojek.org
—Adding solar panels to the roof of a fresh produce delivery bus
  • Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts (New York) $50,000 – LincolnCenter.org
—Bringing solar power, for the first time, to power its iconic cultural venues
  • Randall’s Island Park Alliance (Randall’s Island) $6,000 – randallsisland.org
—Introducing solar-powered composters to make the park’s gardens even more self-sustaining

“The four donations are the most awarded at one time in New York, and that is indicative of these organizations’ outstanding community work and their commitment to reducing their environment footprints,” said Tony Napolillo, Sun Club Program Manager.

Sun Club
donation recipients are selected based on their needs, mission and passion for educating the community on the importance of renewable energy.  Donation amounts and timing of each solar construction project vary based on the needs of the organization and type of solar installation selected.

“We are thrilled to be selected as a 2014 Sun Club recipient because it means we can now power an onsite refrigerator and freezer with renewable energy, providing more flexibility to the fresh produce we deliver to people that need it,” said Tanya Fields, Executive Director, The BLK ProjeK. “As an organization that seeks to provide a source of health and wellness to impacted communities, this solar donation elevates our initiatives and makes them more environmentally-friendly.”

Here Comes the Sun: About the Sun Club

The Sun Club program has donated over $2.5 million to more than 55 solar projects since 2002. These solar donations benefit the non-profits for years after the initial installation as they continually help reduce electricity costs, enabling these organizations to better serve their community. By harnessing the power of the sun, the donation recipients have access to an abundant, pollution-free source of electricity: more energy from the sun falls on the earth in one hour than is used by everyone in the world in one year!
