Green Mountain Energy Company Seeking Texas Non-Profits to Apply for Solar Array Donations

Company’s Big Texas Sun Club® will choose 2011 recipients in August

AUSTIN, Texas – Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation’s leading competitive retail provider of cleaner energy, is seeking Texas non-profit organizations interested in hosting and owning a solar energy system in 2011. Green Mountain is donating solar array systems to qualifying Texas non-profits through its Big Texas Sun Club®. The company is inviting organizations who want to be considered for future Big Texas Sun Club solar installations to apply online by Friday, July 30, 2010.

Big Texas Sun Club

The mission of the Big Texas Sun Club is to fund, build and promote solar power in Texas, while assisting socially-responsible organizations to reduce their environmental footprints. Big Texas Sun Club members are Green Mountain customers who voluntarily pay an additional $5.00 on their monthly electricity bill to support solar development and education throughout Texas. The solar installations help non-profits reduce their carbon footprint and promote renewable energy in the surrounding community.

Since 2002 when the Big Texas Sun Club launched, Green Mountain and its customers have donated 23 solar arrays in Texas, which are capable of generating about 200 kilowatts (kW) of solar. These solar arrays have avoided 2.5 million pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions over their lifetime! This is equivalent to taking 84,000 cars off the road for a day or nearly 800,000 households turning off all of their lights for a day.

“Green Mountain Energy Company’s mission is to change the way power is made,” said Paul Markovich, President of Residential Services for Green Mountain Energy Company. “Each solar array we install through the Big Texas Sun Club helps us achieve that mission and give back to the local community.”
