Green Mountain Energy Company to Power ClubCorp Properties in South Texas
Austin, TX July 29, 2005 Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's leading retail provider of cleaner energy, announced today its relationship with ClubCorp to provide cleaner electricity for ClubCorp's properties in South Texas. Based on data from the EPA, ClubCorp is the first company in Texas to purchase cleaner electricity for golf courses. Green Mountain Energy Company will serve 13 golf courses and clubs around South Texas. By purchasing Green Mountain Energy
® electricity, ClubCorp could help reduce its share of carbon dioxide (CO
2) pollution, underlining cleaner electricity's mainstream acceptance as the economical and responsible source of commercial energy.
The electricity product being purchased for ClubCorp is cleaner than typical system power in Texas. The clubs and courses use about 23,000 megawatt-hours of power per year and will help prevent the release of more than 3.3 million pounds of CO
2, a greenhouse gas, into the air each year that's equivalent to not driving approximately 3.7 million miles annually.
"ClubCorp is proud to be partnering with Green Mountain Energy Company," said John Beckert, ClubCorp's CEO and president. "Our clubs go to great lengths to be environmentally conscious community stewards, whether it is by abiding by the standards of the Audubon Society, protecting wetlands, or, as in this case, purchasing a cleaner electricity product. This partnership allows our clubs in South Texas to make a difference."
By purchasing a cleaner electricity product from Green Mountain Energy Company, ClubCorp is helping to make a difference by increasing the demand for new renewable energy facilities, like the Green Mountain Energy
® Wind Farm at Brazos, which began operations in 2004 thanks in part to demand created by Green Mountain Energy electricity customers.
Among the ClubCorp courses in South Texas to purchase cleaner electricity is the Clubs of Kingwood at Kingwood in Houston, which consists of five 18-hole golf courses over 1,000 acres and is known as the "world's largest private country club." Other clubs in the Houston area to be served by Green Mountain Energy Company are Bay Oaks Country Club, The Clubs of Kingwood at Atascocita, The Club at Falcon Point, The Clubs of Kingwood at Deerwood, Hearthstone Country Club, Willow Creek Golf Club, The Downtown Club at Houston Center, Greenspoint Club, WestLake Club, University Club, and Houston City Club. Green Mountain Energy Company will also provide service for The Club at Cimarron in Mission.
"This is another milestone for cleaner electricity initiatives in Texas," said Scott Hart, president of commercial services for Green Mountain Energy Company. "More and more, mainstream companies and organizations understand that corporate responsibility and the economic bottom line are easily achievable through the right partnerships."
TES Energy Services, LP facilitated the deal between ClubCorp and Green Mountain Energy Company.
"We enjoy working with a first-class organization like Green Mountain Energy Company," said Brian Markham, president of TES Energy Services. "This is another shining example of the success of deregulation in Texas and we look forward to facilitating future deals to continue to drive the development of the Texas market."
