First Municipality in Deregulated Texas Market to Choose Cleaner Electricity
Austin, TX March 17, 2005 The city of Corsicana, Texas, announced today its purchase of cleaner electricity from Austin-based Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's largest retail provider of cleaner electricity. The city of Corsicana is the first municipality in the state to sign up for cleaner electricity from Green Mountain Energy Company.
Green Mountain Energy
® electricity is cleaner than typical system power in Texas and will be purchased for all of the city of Corsicana's buildings, maintenance facilities, ballparks, pump stations, water plants, and sewage treatment facilities. By purchasing cleaner energy from Green Mountain Energy Company, the city will help prevent the release of nearly 1,100 tons of carbon dioxide (CO
2), a greenhouse gas, into the air each year equivalent to not driving approximately 2.4 million miles annually. To put this into perspective, it would be similar to driving a car between Boston and San Francisco 748 times.
C.L. "Buster" Brown, mayor of Corsicana, said, "We had an opportunity to save the city money on our electricity bill with Green Mountain Energy Company while at the same time doing something good for our environment. We're glad to be trendsetters for other cities in Texas to follow."
"We're glad to see a city like Corsicana leading the way in making smart energy choices," said Scott Hart, president of commercial services for Green Mountain Energy Company. "Corsicana is setting a great example of how municipalities in Texas can save taxpayer dollars through the purchase of cleaner electricity."
Hart added, "Our cleaner electricity products, coupled with the competitive rates we are offering to many Texas businesses and organizations, make choosing Green Mountain Energy electricity an extremely compelling proposition."
By purchasing a cleaner electricity product from Green Mountain Energy Company, the city of Corsicana is helping to make a difference by increasing the demand for new renewable energy facilities like the Green Mountain Energy
® Wind Farm at Brazos.
