For the First Time, Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity Home Equipped With Solar Array
Dallas, TX January 21, 2005 Green Mountain Energy Company, one of the nation's leading residential providers of cleaner electricity, and Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity have teamed up to promote clean energy awareness in Dallas by installing a 1.2 kWh solar array on a recently completed Habitat home. The home, located in the North Fair Park area of Dallas, was funded and built by students at Dallas Baptist University.
As part of an ongoing partnership between Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity and Dallas Baptist University, students from the university built the home on the hilltop campus. Dedicated in November of 2004, the home will be occupied by the Cazeres family. Maria Cazeres, originally from Mexico, and her two children will live in the house. The eldest daughter recently graduated with honors from high school and is attending college.
"We feel this is an important partnership," said Norm Wilbur, executive director of Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity. "It's exciting to be a part of the first solar Habitat Home in Dallas. It creates a genuine opportunity to continue building homes in the Dallas area while doing something positive for our environment. Clearly a win-win situation for Habitat and Dalla sites."
This is the first time Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity has been involved with a home with a solar array installed. The 1.2 kWh solar will offset about 2,056 pounds of carbon dioxide (C0
2), a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming, annually. To put it in layman terms, this would be like not driving 2,284 miles. It would take 140 trees to remove this much C0
2 from the air annually. The array will also help the Habitat family save on their electricity bill each year. Conservation Services Group (CSG) designed and managed the installation of the solar panels for Green Mountain Energy.
"This is a great opportunity for us to continue our education campaign in Texas around renewable energy and give something back to the community," said Heidi Schrab, general manager of the Texas region for Green Mountain Energy Company. "We are looking forward to our continued relationship with the Habitat for Humanity organization as we continue our mission to change the way power is made."
John Hoffner, who directed the installation for CSG, said, "We are excited to be bringing solar power to more homes in Texas, particularly for Habitat for Humanity homeowners. Residents of these 'sun powered' homes will pay less for electricity and make a significant contribution to preserving our environment."
Local PV installer Phil Fisher of Solar Systems Installations of Coppell, Texas noted that: "Solar electric systems such as these are relatively maintenance free and work best on hot sunny days helping to reduce the local utility peak demand for electricity."
Green Mountain Energy Company has been offering 100 percent pollution-free electricity in Texas since April of 2001, with Dallas being one of the more successful markets. For more information on Green Mountain Energy Company's 100 percent pollution free products in Texas, go to
