Green Mountain Energy Company Achieves Renewable Energy And Customer Milestone

Renewable Purchases Surpass 6 Billion kWh in Six Years; Cleaner Energy Customers Reach 600,000 Nationwide

Austin, TX — October 6, 2004 — Green Mountain Energy Company, the nation's largest retail provider of cleaner* electricity, announced today that it has achieved two key milestones in the delivery of cleaner electricity to its customers. The first is the purchase of more than six billion kWh of renewables since the company's inception, averaging nearly one billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewables annually across all its markets. The second milestone is the 600,000th customer purchasing cleaner electricity nationwide due to Green Mountain Energy Company efforts.

"The strides that we have made in the last six years to achieve this pinnacle of success prove that hard work, focus and commitment to a mission have their rewards," said Paul Thomas, president and CEO of Green Mountain Energy Company. "We have made more than twice the renewable energy purchases our competitors have made."

Every year, the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) ranks green pricing programs across the nation in a variety of ways, including customer participation, MWh of renewable energy delivered, and largest percentage of customer participation. In 2003, the top ten green pricing programs in terms of customer participation had approximately 190,000 customers combined. The top ten green pricing programs in terms of renewable energy supply is about one billion kWh combined.

"Over the last five years, we've seen significant growth in residential customers having access to a cleaner energy options, and making the decisions to purchase cleaner energy. We expect this trend to continue," said Lori Bird, senior energy analyst with NREL.

In 2003, Green Mountain Energy Company customers together prevented the emission of over 601,580 tons of carbon dioxide (C02). It would take over 81 million trees one year to reduce that much C02. It would be similar to removing nearly 107,000 cars off the road for one year to avoid that much C02 pollution. That's as much carbon dioxide as a car makes in 1.3 billion miles.
