Proper CFL Disposal
Compact fluorescent lights (CFLs) are ultra-efficient alternatives to standard incandescent bulbs. In fact, if every U.S. household replaces the incandescent lighting in their five most frequently used fixtures with CFLs, the nation will save the electricity equivalent of shutting down 21 power plants!
Because CFLs use a very small amount of mercury (about 5 milligrams, or roughly the equivalent to how much would cover the tip of a ball-point pen), they should never be thrown out with household trash. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends consumers take advantage of local recycling options for compact fluorescent light bulbs, where available.
To find a recycling location near you, visit www.earth911.org, type CFL in the search box and enter your zip code.
